What Every Senior in Edmonton, AB Needs to Know About Breast Cancer Awareness

Breast Cancer Awareness for Seniors | Breast cancer is a serious disease that should be given serious awareness. There are thousands of new cases each year but awareness and screenings, can decrease these numbers.

October is #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth

For every 100,000 women, there are more than 80 new cases under 65 vs. more than 400 new cases for those over 65.

In recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the following information is provided to bring awareness to what seniors should know about the cancer that affects people from all walks of life.

Breast Cancer Awareness in Senior Women Statistics

#1. New diagnoses:

Recent studies indicate that at least half of new breast cancer diagnoses occur in women older than 60 and at least 20% of those are 70 years of age and older.

#2. Breast cancer occurrence:

Statistics show that one in eight women will have the disease at some point in their lives. In breast cancer cases where close relatives such as mother, sister, daughter and other first-degree family members have developed breast cancer, the risk doubles.

However, don’t be deceived, it is entirely possible to encounter the disease without a hereditary connection.

#3. Family history:

Although, family history is considered, less than 20% of those diagnosed have a family member who is dealing with or has suffered from the disease.

#4. Breast cancer in men:

To be clear, not only women develop breast cancer. The odds are less but one out of 1,000 males will develop the disease at some point.

Long-Term Care for Preventive Maintenance

There are long-term care and preventive maintenance tips to help decrease the chances of acquiring breast cancer. While these are helpful tips, they are not to be confused with guaranteed prevention, maintenance is also important.

Three Tips to Prevent Breast Cancer

Tip #1. Stay Physically Active:

Aging adults must stay active to keep a healthy metabolism. Research indicates that women who’ve gained between 20 and 30 pounds after turning 18 are up to 40% more likely to receive a breast cancer diagnosis than those who regulate a healthy weight. Estrogen linked to fat in overweight women could be the cause.

Tip #2. Healthy Diet:

Healthy eating is an important regimen for all cancer prevention, including breast cancer. Those who consume foods with increased levels of carotenoids have almost a 20% less risk of acquiring breast cancer than those who don’t. Carotenoids are present in vegetables and fruits.

Tip #3. Regular screenings:

Maintain a schedule for regular screenings and always remember that early detection is a factor in effective treatment.

Long-term care for seniors involves many factors. It is essential to support preventive maintenance for all illnesses and diseases. Comfort Keepers® can help.
