What Every Senior in Edmonton, AB Needs to Know About Coping with Loss

Seniors Coping With Loss | Experiencing the loss of people we have loved is a difficult reality of aging. Older adults may dread the holiday season without their spouses or lifelong companions. They may be suffering through this season that is supposed to be filled with cheer.

Festive holiday gatherings may produce additional grieving. Traditions like holiday shopping, decorating, or other simple things can increase sadness and loneliness.

Six Tips to Employ with Seniors Coping with Loss:

Tip #1. Time:

First, allow brokenhearted adults time to heal without feeling pressured to participate in events if they’re not ready.

Tip #2. Social Gatherings:

Sad feelings, grief, and loneliness may be worsened during the holidays. Remind the older adult that this is normal and that gatherings and activities that were meant to be joyful may bring up sorrowful feelings instead. It may be helpful for the aging adult to remember and accept these emotions as normal.

Tip #3. Support System:

Figure out which holiday traditions are the most challenging for your aging friend or relative, then connect with his or her social circle or family in advance so they can be more supportive.

Tip #4. Diet:

People who are grieving still need to eat healthy foods and exercise regularly. It can help!

Tip #5. New Traditions:

Commemorating a loved one by donating to a charity or volunteering at a non-profit organization can help. New holiday traditions can be created.

Tip #6. Help:

Reaffirm to your loved one that asking for help and even expecting it is alright. Perhaps there are helpful friends, family, neighbours, and other support in the community that may have been forgotten.
