Prevent Diabetes | With 50% of Americans older than 65 years suffering from pre-diabetes, learning how to prevent it is important. The pre-diabetic is already at risk for developing type 2 diabetes, but it can usually be stopped from progressing further with the right lifestyle changes.
Lifestyle changes that incorporate healthy foods, more activity, and losing some extra pounds may help avoid serious health complications, such as nerve, kidney, and heart damage.
Physical activity helps with weight loss but also may lower blood sugar. Aerobic exercise and strength training can help with muscle strength and reduce joint pain. Aerobic and strengthening swim classes are perfect for people who require the lightest stress on their joints. Walking is always free, convenient, and especially fun with a buddy.
Seniors should work out 150 minutes per week, but it can be broken down into smaller times, like 30 minutes 5 times/week. Are you looking for senior fitness or exercise programs? With a doctor’s approval, seniors can start by calling your local community center or senior center.
Diabetes can often be prevented with diet and weight loss. Talk with your doctor or nutritionist about the healthiest food choices for weight loss.
Food can be the best medicine. What you eat will impact your overall health. Developing healthier habits, like eating proper portion sizes, adding more fibre, and limiting sugary and salty foods will affect your overall health.
Drink more water. Replace juice and soda with water infused with citrus fruits, berries, cucumber, or sprigs of mint. Add more whole foods, like fruit and vegetables. Stay away from foods with long ingredient lists.
