Reduce the Risk of Falls | It’s important for seniors to reduce the risk of falls. Falls are the number one cause of injury for seniors and they often lead to serious health problems such as disability, fractures, head trauma, and chronic pain. Older adults who fall not only double their chances of falling again but also put their independence and quality of life at risk. Preventing these accidents can greatly improve one’s chances of staying healthy and independent.
As they age, seniors face many health issues that can cause accidents. Muscle weakness, heart disease, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia, malnutrition, low blood pressure, poor vision, ear infections, or sensitivity in the legs or feet are all risk factors.
While most families pay attention to obvious fall hazards such as stairs and slippery shower floors, many overlook less obvious features that can cause serious injuries as well. Loose rugs, certain types of carpeting, and dimly lit hallways can lead to accidents. Fall-proofing the home and installing safety devices can help.
Shoes that don’t fit properly, are slippery, or do not offer support can cause balance problems that lead to falls. Fortunately, there is a lot of footwear that is safe as well as stylish.
Seniors who take medications regularly should consult with their doctor and learn whether their meds have unwanted side effects such as dizziness or balance issues.
Weakness in the legs and feet can often cause balance problems. However, healthy eating and exercise habits can prevent these risk factors.
Studies have shown that there is a correlation between senior depression and falls. Positive mental health can improve many aspects of a senior’s life, as well as reduce the risk of falls. To improve the physical and mental quality of life seniors should stay connected to their loved ones, engage in fun activities, and find a sense of purpose.
Although some families consider fall prevention only when their loved one is already hurt, taking precautions beforehand is a strategy that could significantly improve a senior’s quality of life.
