What Every Senior in Edmonton, AB Needs to Know About Heart Attacks

What Does a Heart Attack Look Like? | When someone mentions a heart attack we immediately picture a person who is clutching their chest due to severe pain. Some heart attacks can happen suddenly, while others start slowly and cause pain and discomfort which progress over time. A person can have symptoms for hours before even realizing that they are having a heart attack.

Every year more than 150, 000 Canadians suffer from this condition. Fortunately, with some healthy lifestyle changes, the risk of having a heart attack can be significantly reduced. People who wish to avoid this health problem or are recovering after a heart attack should stick to a healthy diet, exercise regularly and avoid stressful situations.

What Does a Heart Attack Look Like?

#1 – Chest discomfort:

Not all people experience chest pain in the same way. Some experience squeezing, while others have a feeling of fullness.

#2 – Pain or discomfort throughout the body:

A heart attack doesn’t have to cause pain only in the chest area. It can lead to soreness in the neck, arms, jaw or back.

#3 – Shortness of breath:

Although it is often not recognized as one, shortness of breath can be a sign of a heart attack.

#4 – Nausea:

Symptoms such as lightheadedness, vomiting, cold sweats and nausea are also signs that the person is having a heart attack.

Types of Heart Attacks

#1 – NSTEMI:

A restricted blood flow to the heart through a coronary leads to a heart attack.

#2 – Demand Ischemia:

Some heart attacks have nothing to do with artery blockages. A heart attack can happen when the heart needs more oxygen than it is receiving.

#3 – Silent Heart Attacks:

Some people have a heart attack without even knowing it. This type is called a silent heart attack.

#4 – Coronary Artery Spasm:

When the artery wall tightens it can cause a restricted blood flow through the artery, which leads to a heart attack.

#5 – Cardiac Arrest:

This is not exactly a heart attack, but a term used when a patient’s heart stops beating.

Recognizing the symptoms on time and acting accordingly can be a life-saver. If you experience these symptoms or you see someone having them, seek medical attention immediately.
