Facts About Arthritis | Studies show that one in five adults suffer from arthritis. Although it is the leading cause of disability among seniors in America it is not a diagnosis. Instead, it is a term that covers more than one hundred conditions that affect the joints.
A lot of people think that arthritis affects only hands and feet, but in fact, this condition can affect any joint in the body. People who are experiencing symptoms such as joint redness, swelling, pain, stiffness, warmth, or difficulty with movement should visit their physician.
To identify the type of arthritis, medical professionals will conduct a physical exam, gather medical history, and even run some blood tests. Afterward, depending on the type of arthritis, they will determine the ongoing treatment plan. Although this condition cannot be cured, some treatments help manage the symptoms.
Seniors who suffer from arthritis may need to change their daily routines and stop performing certain activities. Although some regular tasks might present a challenge, planning can make things easier. Older adults who cannot stand for a long time due to arthritis pain can place a stool in their kitchen so they can prepare meals sitting down. A lot of seniors who are experiencing joint pain start using non-affected parts of the body more often. For example, if a person’s wrist hurts, they will use their shoulder to open the door.
Seniors with arthritis should not spend too much time sitting since this can only make things worse. Instead, they should walk around and stretch every 15 minutes, even if they need to set an alarm that will remind them to do so.
Overweight seniors with arthritis should consult their doctor for exercise and diet recommendations. Since excess weight can worsen the condition, maintaining a healthy weight is a must.
