Protect Senior Skin | Everyone is happy that summer is nearly here and everyone, including our older adults in long-term care, will get outside again to take advantage of the warmer weather.
Having ample time outdoors is a health benefit in many ways, physically and emotionally. Nonetheless, the sun can be detrimental to skin and unfortunately, even more so to older skin.
Aging skin must be protected from the harsh UV rays of summer.
Older people will sweat more in the warmer months, and need assistance keeping themselves fresh and clean. There are many gentle cleansers designed for sensitive skin. These are recommended because the skin becomes fragile as people age.
Specifically, the skin gets much thinner because it has less collagen and elastin than when younger. Because the skin becomes delicate, it’s important to gently pat the skin dry with soft towels and never scrub.
We think about moisturizing in the winter, but sometimes we neglect it in the summer. The air conditioning can dry skin out as much as the furnace heat. In summary, moisturize all year round.
Adults in long-term care will need help applying sunscreen if outside for more than a few minutes. Help prevent burning, sun damage, skin cancer, and other age-related conditions. Unquestionably, as people age, it’s challenging for the skin to recover from the sun.
Consuming clean water can help purify bodies and skin of naturally occurring toxins. People who drink ample amounts of water often have noticeable improvements in skin tone. In particular, six to eight glasses per day is typically suggested for seniors in long-term care.
Older adults in long-term care are better off remaining indoors during the midday heat. The hot afternoon sun causes significant harm to the skin and brings the danger of heat sickness. Therefore, if an older adult must be outdoors in the summer heat, limit it to a minimum.
Following these recommendations for older adults will reduce dry skin, the risk of skin cancer, and other summer conditions that are easily prevented. Undeniably, another benefit is more youthful-looking skin, which can help seniors feel better about their skin.
