What are the recommended immunizations for seniors? Research shows seniors are not getting the necessary vaccines to stay protected from serious illnesses. Therefore, the fact that more than 60 percent of people hospitalized due to flu are seniors is not surprising.
As we age our immunity system gets weaker and we become much more susceptible to serious illnesses and infections. These diseases also affect younger adults, but with them, the recovery period is much shorter. When it comes to older adults, the complications that arise from these illnesses can put their lives in danger.
For example, respiratory diseases are one of the leading causes of death among seniors. However, even though the risk of getting pneumonia and influenza can be reduced with vaccinations. Older adults with diabetes are more likely to die from the flu than other individuals, while this illness can cause complications in seniors with chronic diseases. Just like with influenza, the risk of getting pneumonia can also be reduced with vaccination.
To stay healthy, seniors should try to get vaccinated on time against common, preventable diseases.
Vaccines can reduce the risk of developing some diseases, as well as make symptoms less severe for those seniors who do get ill. Immunizations can help older adults maintain their physical well-being, which is why they should talk to their health providers and ensure they are up to date with their vaccinations.
Most doctors recommend the influenza vaccine, shingles vaccine, Tdap vaccine, pneumococcal vaccine and hepatitis B vaccine.
