Brainstorming Bucket List Ideas For Seniors

Blog  |  June 19, 2018

Bucket List Ideas For Seniors | If you’re interested in putting a smile on the face of your loved one or patient, there’s no better way than to help them accomplish their bucket list. It’s not only fulfilling but fun! However, it could be a challenge to discover what those bucket list ideas for seniors might be.

If we were discussing bucket list ideas for seniors in college, they’d likely be planning to catch their favourite band in concert or travel abroad, but for an older demographic, it may not be so predictable.

As seniors live out the last chapter of their lives, they have more time on their hands – thanks to milestones like retirement and adult children – to think about their lives, reflect, determine what’s important to them, and what is worth prioritizing in their final days. In addition to achieving this level of self-awareness, the emotions in seniors can shift, resulting in a bucket list that is not so cut and dry.

One positive emotion that often fades with age is a sense of hope or excitement about the future. Hope in the final phase of one’s life “is the way old people remain young.” according to author, Robert Sardello. For seniors and those suffering from a critical illness, a great way to instill a sense of hope is by helping them fulfill their dreams and accomplish items off of their bucket lists.

Since 85% of seniors state that having plans in those final years help them have a chance in choosing how their story ends, accomplishing bucket list ideas for seniors can provide them with a sense of comfort and purpose.

Bucket List Ideas for Seniors

You, or your loved one, may be wondering what might or should appear on this bucket list. Since many of their hopes and dreams are likely to revolve around their emotions, here are a few unique ideas that seniors might want to add to their list.

Volunteer and/or Donate – Time may not have been on their side in their youth to help others in need. Now, they may find happiness in giving back to others by way of donating their time, money, skills or knowledge, or even possessions.

Impart Wisdom – If your loved one wants to get something off of their mind and into the hands and heads of others, encourage them or to document their life by writing a novel or memoir, teaching a course, acting as a guest lecturer, or recording their wisdom on video.

Connect with Others – Seniors may want to meet new people or strengthen existing ties in their life before they have to say goodbye. Writing letters, emails, or video chatting with those they love can help build upon current relationships, whereas joining local community groups can create a sense of belonging.

Leave Their Mark on The World – Sometimes seniors feel the need to accomplish something that contributes to their overall legacy. If they feel a strong desire to achieve this, encourage them to build, invent, or create something of value and help them with the process.

Return to Their Youth – If there was ever an adventurous or controversial experience that they always wanted to try but was never able to, like dying their hair pink or brewing beer, help make it happen so that they’re not left with any regrets.
