How Rituals Can Help Caregivers | Caregivers can easily become overwhelmed. Providing in-home care for parents and loved ones is difficult enough. But combine that with work, family, and other demands on their time, and it’s not hard to see how caregiver compassion fatigue can set in.
Rituals can help by giving caregivers the opportunity to centre themselves, both before and after the day.
Rituals are similar to routines and habits. All three are done on a regular basis. The biggest difference is how much thought is put into doing the activities involved. Habits have almost no thought behind them, like absently stroking your cat. Routines such as putting on the morning coffee require some thought through a series of steps, but not much.
Rituals on the other hand have a considerable amount of thought. In fact, it’s the mindfulness – the focus on the activity itself – that triggers stress relief, reduces the risk for depression, and clears the mind.
A great example is the tea ritual. Today’s modern version may not look exactly the same as the ancient ceremonies from Japan and China. But it is still an effective way to focus the mind and reduce stress.
