How do you know when your parents require 24-hour care, overnight care, or even senior holiday homecare? The holidays are around the corner; families will be travelling far and wide to visit their friends and relatives. During your visit, if you notice your loved one acting unusual or displaying irregular behaviour, including forgetfulness or accidental self-harm (i.e. tripping down staircases or slipping in the bathtub), these could be signs of necessary homecare during the holidays and beyond.
There are various forms of aggression linked to declining health and an inability to take care of one’s self. Types of aggression may include physical or verbal harassment and can be caused by a variety of things. Such as, a bad reaction to medications or the senior realizing their memory is weakening.
People suffering from memory loss may feel embarrassed when their memory is corrected, which can trigger a negative response.
Slipping in or out of the shower is a sign that your loved one may not be able to clean themselves without risking adequately injuring themselves. In addition, homes with large staircases pose a significant risk for elderly people.
In addition to this, other signs of an unsafe living space are hoarded boxes, bags, and other unused household items. Often, people who are unable to clean their homes are often unable to take enough care of themselves.
Sundowning is associated with individuals who may have Alzheimer’s disease or Dementia. When the sun sets, and the natural light is reduced, symptoms becomes more prominent.
To this end, if you notice a trend in behaviour as the sun sets, you should have a serious conversation with your loved one and contact an experienced professional.
