Stress is a permanent part of our life journey, whether positive or negative. It just happens, but for seniors, stressors like raising children or career responsibilities have exchanged for other ones. Older adults may worry about their health, declining independence, finances, illness and death of loved ones. These are normal and valid concerns. The important thing is for adults to find ways to cope with stress in a healthy manner.
Studies show that stress can be connected to mental and physical problems, from anxiety and depression to hypertension and a lowered immune system. Stress increases the risk of heart disease by 40%, heart attack by 25% and stroke by 50% and it can exacerbate other existing conditions, as well. So, what can an aging adult do to manage stress in a positive way?
Fortunately, there are numerous stress relief techniques to improve health and wellbeing. The following list may be helpful.
Meditate daily or whenever anxious feelings arise
Practice deep breathing. Learn mindfulness exercises
Connect with friends and family to spend time together
Be consistent with an exercise regimen that the doctor approves. Eat a healthy diet
Journal thoughts and feelings in the morning or before going to bed
Create a gratitude journal and take time to reflect on positive things that have happened
Volunteer your time in a community or neighborhood non-profit or school
Make a to-do list and check it off as you increase your productivity
Go to a yoga class or try a practice at home
Enjoy relaxing music before going to bed
Watch a comedy show or funny movie
Travel out of town, take a break, and recharge your attitude
