Heart and Stroke Canada advises that older adults incorporate muscle and bone-strengthening exercises targeting major muscle groups at least twice a week. Maintaining physical activity is crucial throughout all life stages, but it becomes particularly essential as we age. Participating in the suggested daily duration of moderate activity, which is a minimum of 30 minutes, offers a variety of long-term advantages and can enhance overall health for individuals with specific health conditions and disabilities. In contrast, a sedentary lifestyle can adversely impact both physical and emotional health, potentially heightening the risk of injuries and the onset of various diseases.

Low-Impact Exercises for Seniors

  • Walking: Walking is a gentle exercise that is easier on the joints compared to running. It requires no special equipment or gym membership; all you need is a good pair of walking shoes and a flat surface. Aim for a brisk pace for at least 15-20 minutes to reap the benefits.

  • Leg Raises: These exercises can be performed with minimal space. By standing behind a chair and holding onto it for support, you can lift one leg to the side and back, repeating this with different variations to strengthen the lower back and thigh muscles.
  • Dancing: The popularity of dance classes has surged in recent years, and for good reason. The dynamic movements involved in dance can enhance circulation and flexibility, while also providing social interaction and enjoyment.
