Senior Skin Health | Everyone wants to hurry outside when summer approaches. Getting outdoors to take advantage of the physical and emotional health benefits is great, but remember to safeguard older skin from the sun and heat. The sun can be detrimental to skin, but even more so to older skin. Senior skin must be protected from the UV rays of summer. Some recommendations for safeguarding older skin follow:
Adults in home health care will need assistance keeping their skin fresh and clean as everyone tends to sweat more in the heat. A variety of gentle cleansers are created especially for sensitive skin. Gentle cleansers are recommended as older skin becomes more fragile and becomes prone to skin tears. The production of collagen and elastin reduces with age and the skin becomes delicate. Use caution to prevent harm by never scrubbing the skin. Gently pat skin dry with soft towels.
We all seem to remember moisturizing in the winter and often forget it in summer, so be mindful that air conditioning dries skin as much as the furnace heat in winter. Moisturize daily.
Our aging friends in home health care need our help with sunscreen application if going outside in summer. Prevent sunburn, skin cancer, or other conditions. Older skin has difficulty recovering from the sun and heat.
Drinking sufficient amounts of water will help purify the body and skin of toxins found in the environment. People in home health care who are encouraged to drink 6 to 8 glasses of water daily often have visible improvements in skin tone.
Adults in home health care might be better off staying inside to avoid the midday heat and sun. The afternoon sun can cause harm to the skin. Additionally, it creates the danger of heat sickness, so if a senior in home health care is going to be outdoors in the heat, keep it brief.
Seniors who follow these suggestions will lessen their dry skin and the risk of skin cancer and other conditions.
