What do you know about strokes in seniors? Stroke is one of the main causes of death in Canada. Although anyone can have a stroke, statistics show that three-quarters of people affected by it are seniors. It is the primary cause of physical disability and one of the main causes of mental disability. More women die from a stroke than men in Canada. However, since women live longer, most survivors of the stroke who are living with the effects are women.
Some of the risk factors for a stroke are high blood pressure, genetics, gender, smoking, heart disease, diabetes, weight, age and the use of certain medications.
There are three main kinds of stroke – ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke and transient ischemic attack. The first one is the most common and occurs when arteries narrow or are blocked which leads to a reduced blood flow to the brain. A hemorrhagic stroke happens when a blood vessel leaks or bursts, causing damage. The last one, the transient ischemic attack is also known as a mini-stroke. Although it is also caused by a narrowing of the arteries, it only causes temporary symptoms.
People who experience stroke symptoms should immediately call 911 or visit their physician. Some of the symptoms are trouble speaking, confusion or trouble understanding, paralysis of the face, arms or legs, trouble seeing or walking, headache, vomiting, neck stiffness and dizziness. When a person reacts quickly and receives medical attention in a short amount of time, they can minimize damage caused by the stroke.
