What Every Senior in Vancouver, BC, Needs to Know About Maintaining Good Eye Health

Senior eye health is important to stay on top of. Vision loss and vision impairments are common issues in old age. Vision-reducing eye diseases such as, cataracts or glaucoma, can have a major impact on a senior’s independence and quality of life.

However, many age-related vision problems can be improved or prevented when seniors take care of their eyes. The following tips are eight simple strategies seniors can adopt to maintain good vision.

Senior Eye Health: Tips for Keeping Eyes Healthy

#1. Diet:

Delicious food is one of the best ways to practice good eye care. There are plenty of groceries rich in vitamins and nutrients that can help with eye health, such as kale, carrots, eggs, sweet potatoes, oranges, almonds, and salmon.

#2. Regular exercise:

A senior-friendly exercise regimen may not only increase your loved one’s overall health but their eyesight too. For example, increased blood circulation can remove toxins and increase oxygen levels in the eyes.

#3. Avoid eye trauma:

Head injuries can cause eye trauma and damage vision. Remind your loved one to wear goggles if they work in their garden or shed, use sharp objects and chemicals with caution, and eliminate potential tripping hazards from their home.

Senior Eye Health: More Tips for Keeping Eyes Healthy

Smart computer use: Spending too much time in front of the computer is not recommended for anyone, let alone seniors as they can even develop headaches, eye irritations, and vision problems if they sit in front of the screen for far too long. Your Mam or Dad can easily avoid this by limiting their time on the computer or laptop, opting to use corrective eyewear, and making sure their computer desk has good lighting.

Consider other health issues – Prescribed medications and certain chronic conditions can contribute to poor vision, so your parent must talk to their physician and learn more about how their current medical problems may reflect on their eyesight.

Wear sunglasses – While younger generations may use eyewear as an accessory or a fashion statement, sunglasses offer protection from harmful UV rays that can cause cataract development in senior years.

Sleep – Getting a good night’s sleep is very important, so it is no surprise that resting the eyes helps older adults maintain good vision.

Vision screenings – For seniors, changes to vision and eye health can happen rapidly. Your Mom or Dad can avoid this by seeing their physician and getting regularly screened.
