What Every Senior in Vancouver, BC, Needs to Know About Seniors and Hernias

Hernias and Seniors | A hernia occurs when an organ or tissue makes its way through a frail spot in a muscle or connective tissue. Unfortunately, at least 10% of the population will struggle with this medical condition at least once in their life. There are several types of hernias, and their severity and symptoms can vary.

No matter what type of hernia one might have, their condition can easily turn into a medical emergency. This is why it is very important that seniors who think they have a hernia consult their doctors as soon as possible, even if this condition is not causing them any pain or inconvenience.

Hernias and Seniors: What to Look For

Seniors who have a hernia will notice a lump on their body. It can be located in the abdomen, on a leg, groin or another part of the body.  It is important to remember that hernias can vary in size and they can be soft or firm as well as painful or painless. Seniors who have hernia might also experience a swelling and heavy sensation in the area where the hernia is located.

Hernias and Seniors: The Dangers Of

Hernias are most dangerous when the trapped tissue loses blood supply. This type of condition is known as a strangulated hernia and requires immediate surgery. If your loved one has a hernia and suddenly starts experiencing intense pain, nausea, and vomiting, as well as fever, they should immediately receive medical assistance. Your loved one should also contact their doctor the moment they notice that their lump has become larger or has turned red or purple.

Seniors who suspect that they might have a hernia should visit their health provider as soon as possible. Their doctor will perform a physical exam and, if needed, order an ultrasound or CT scan. If your loved one gets diagnosed with a hernia, they should talk to their doctor and find out what type of hernia they have, whether they will need surgery and how to tell if their condition is getting worse.

Your parents should also ask their health provider how to care for their hernia and what they should do in case their lump starts to hurt or changes in appearance.
