Maintaining Good Eye Care | While it is normal for vision to deteriorate with age, there are some proven ways to improve eye health and maintain good eye care in senior years. Here are 5 easy-to-follow tips that can help your loved one take better care of their eyes.
Whenever your loved one goes outside during warmer months, they should wear sunglasses. However, not just sunglasses – the best option is sunglasses that block at least 99% of UVA and UVB rays. Wraparound sunglasses are generally a good choice for older adults, but if your parent still drives a car, polarized lenses may be a better option.
The food we eat has a huge effect on our bodies and health. So, it is not surprising that your loved one can improve their eye health by eating a healthy diet. We all know that carrots are great for the eyes, but this is not entirely true – it cannot hurt to eat carrots, but there are better foods for the eyes, including leafy greens, oily fish with omega-3 fatty acids, non-meat protein, and citrus fruits. Eating properly also lowers the risk of developing diabetes, the main cause of blindness in older adults.
If your loved one loves spending time on their computer, tablet, or phone, they should use protective lenses that are made for computer use. Older adults should also ideally take screen breaks once every 20-30 minutes.
Exercise is important for overall health – and it plays a crucial role in eye health, too. Exercising prevents diabetes as well as a wide range of other health conditions that may cause eye problems. Your loved one should aim to exercise for at least 30 minutes per day – they do not have to engage in strenuous activity, it is perfectly fine if they just walk, do yoga, or stretch.
Seniors should visit their eye doctor at least once a year. This way, they can detect any problems early on, before they become irreversible. If your loved one notices any vision and eye changes, like flashes, eye spots, or soreness, they should also schedule a doctor’s appointment as soon as possible.
