What Every Senior in Vancouver, BC, Needs to Know About Autumn Safety

Autumn Safety Tips for Seniors | The summer-to-fall transition has much to offer. The sweltering heat begins to fade, the colours change, and we start to prepare for the holiday season. However, like with all other seasonal changes, there is a price to pay, and the positive changes come with certain health and safety dangers.

At this time of year, seniors are especially susceptible. Colder temperatures, influenza, and even fallen leaves could affect the well-being and independence of seniors. By following a few tips and best practices, seniors may stay safe and enjoy everything the autumn season has to offer. Here are a few to share with your elderly clients.

5 Autumn Safety Tips for Seniors:

Tip #1 Get the Influenza Vaccine:

Flu complications such as pneumonia and bronchitis are common in seniors. These repercussions can lead to serious illness, hospitalization, and even death.

Furthermore, the flu has the potential to aggravate pre-existing illnesses. Fluzone High-Dose, Fluad, and Flublok Quadrivalent are some vaccines to consider, but the best choice should be discussed with a physician or other healthcare professional.

Tip #2 Reduce the Risk of Influenza:

In addition to immunization, other measures should be taken to lower the risk of the flu:

    • Avoid coming into contact with persons who are sick.
    • Hands should be washed with warm water and soap throughout the day, or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer should be used.
    • Regularly disinfect surfaces that are likely to be polluted.
    • Exercise can help to strengthen your immune system (with physician approval)

Tip #3 Reduce Fire Risk:

People often resort to space heaters or fireplaces to keep warm as the weather grows cooler. It is important to keep flammable objects out of the reach of these devices. Check that fire extinguishers are in good working order and that smoke detector batteries are up to date.

Tip #4 Keep Warm:

While we’re on the subject of colder weather, seniors need to keep warm. Even though the weather in October is not as cold as in winter, it is still a serious threat. According to the National Institutes of Health, hypothermia can develop quickly after exposure to relatively mild cold temperatures. Seniors should leave the house only when necessary. When they do, it’s vital to dress in layers of loose-fitting clothing.

Tip #5 Clear Away the Leaves:

Falling autumn leaves are lovely to view, but they can easily cause elders to slip and fall. The driveway and pathways must be raked clean. This is especially important if they have become slick and mushy due to rain.
