Vancouver Respite Care | October 26, 2021
Senior Respite Care | Over 8 million Canadians provide unpaid care to a family member or friend, according to CARP. A million or more caretakers are over the age of 65. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 53% of caregivers say their capacity to provide care is harmed by a decline in their health.
Overall, caring for a senior relative can be both gratifying and difficult. Family caregivers must remember to take pauses and exercise self-care to stay happy in their roles.
Respite care transfers the primary caregiver’s obligations to another person, generally a professional caregiver, relative, or friend. This transfer of responsibility allows the primary caregivers relief from their daily duties.
Some families prefer to employ a caregiver for a few hours each day or week for respite care. Alternatively, some arrange respite care to enable a longer holiday or vacation. Respite care can be especially critical for caregivers whose patients suffer from a serious disease.
According to a study led by the Stanford Center on Longevity and Stanford University Psychology Department, with the help of Comfort Keepers and Clear Care.
The study’s goal was to identify the obstacles and stressors family caregivers encounter. Comfort Keepers® contacted the family members and decision-makers of 2,000 clients as part of the study.
Caring for a loved one with a moderate disease puts them in the same emotional state as their peers, with their emotional well-being being higher than that of younger individuals.
When caring for a loved one who is suffering from a serious disease, people’s emotional well-being tends to be lower than their peers.
The incapacity of caregivers to pursue their social interests and friendships is thought to be the catalyst for a drop in emotional well-being.
The findings imply that older people have higher emotional well-being than younger people. These results change when family caregivers care for a senior suffering from a serious disease. Not all elderly individuals with sick relatives are unhappy. Rather, the happiness of the caregiver is dependent on the degree of the relative’s illness.
Caring for an elderly relative can be rewarding and enhance family ties. However, it can also bring feelings of loss, worry, and physical exhaustion. Caregivers put their health and well-being at risk if they don’t also tend to their needs. Senior respite care is the answer for many families.
