Respite Care and Compassion Fatigue | Symptoms of chronic stress are likely to appear anytime family or friends are in a position of caring for a loved one.
The kind loving care provided to someone you love can cause emotional and physical suffering. It’s commonly called compassion fatigue and the term is typically used when people are caring for a loved one who is injured, ill, traumatized or incapacitated.
Even with the best intentions, caregivers may find this a daunting task – mentally, physically and emotionally.
Compassion fatigue may at first sound like burnout, but burnout is more predictable, occurring over a lengthy time, whereas compassion fatigue may arrive suddenly and unexpectedly. Burnout can cause someone to give up a job, or even an occupation, but in the case of compassion fatigue, caregivers can be treated with specific things to do for self-care that can quickly help.
Caregivers must get refreshed and rejuvenated between shifts and duties or they can suffer agonizing emotional and physical pain. They have to be on the watch for symptoms of stress and use stress management tools to continue to live healthily. Caregivers must get assistance before things get too hard for them and their patients.
You probably thought your love and compassion for your loved one would be enough to get you through, but it’s not enough to prevent emotional and physical fatigue.
