5 Ways Home Health Care Can Reduce the Risk of Falls in Senior Homes

What Every Senior in Vancouver, BC, Needs to Know About Reducing the Rick of Falls At Home

Risk of Falls | Many seniors desire to live independently and not be an inconvenience to their families. Therefore, they try to live and function on their own, without the help of others. While this is applaudable, it is sometimes dangerous.

#DYK – One out of three seniors fall each year, but less than half report the incident to their physician.

Seniors take a stumble, trip over an object, or fall uncontrollably and can be injured immediately, or the pain could develop later. A fall shouldn’t go unattended, especially in aging adults.

Because many seniors believe that a simple tumble or fall isn’t a big deal if they aren’t immediately hurting or bleeding, they may not mention that they have fallen. Family members can’t always be around and measures designed to provide peace of mind, and to decrease the possibility of falls.

Tips to Reduce the Risk of Falls in Seniors:

  1. Remove Dangerous Items – fixtures or other objects in the home could lead to falls, and could result in pain and injury. Take a close look at each area of the home and remove any items that present such hazards. Pay close attention to damaged flooring, carpet or throw rugs. Make necessary repairs or replacements to these items to prevent falls.
  2. Declutter – the most effective method for removing the danger of falls inside the home is to keep walkways and hallways clear of clutter. Remove any stacks of paper or other items that could trip someone.
  3. Efficient Lighting – keep rooms in the home well-lit and install brighter lighting appliances in hard-to-see areas. Stairways or other narrow spaces could have restricted visibility, and brighter lighting could make it easier for seniors to navigate in and out of these areas. Night lights should be placed in the senior’s bedroom and bathroom to provide efficient lighting at night.
  4. Handrail Installation – hand and grab rails are beneficial for seniors living alone. Home health care professionals encourage seniors to use the rails when moving throughout the home. They help to decrease the risk of falling. Installation is easy and can be done by a handyman or a family member.
  5. Nonslip Safety Precautions – ensure that floors are nonslip in the kitchen, porch, patio, and other spaces. Place nonslip mats in the bath areas and on bathroom floors, in front of sinks where water may splatter.

Less falls result in fewer injuries for your loved ones. Talk with seniors and remind them how important it is for them to let family members know if any fall hazards are in the home. It is equally important for them to inform the family if they have had a fall.
