Seniors and Alzheimers | September 12, 2017
Sundown Syndrome | September is World Alzheimer’s Awareness Month and we are pleased to introduce you to some of the most beneficial steps to coping with the disease. Alzheimer’s disease causes loved ones to suffer loss of memory, but you can be prepared to help them cope and live a more quality life.
The symptoms and signs affiliated with the degenerative illness will vary, but as memory becomes less cognitive, the symptoms also change. Sundown syndrome is a familiar term and a symptom of the disease. It typically sets in during the middle phase of the disease. It can be represented by slight to maximum confusion, inability to sleep and changes in behaviour. All these can cause unsettled feelings in the family and can also be overwhelming for the person going through the changes.
The name sundown syndrome was given to those experiencing Alzheimer’s symptoms because most of the signs take place in the evening. Mental fatigue or excessive confusion is generally worse by day’s end.
Research for dementia care concludes that up to 20% of those dealing with the disease will suffer from excessive anxiety, and massive confusion and become easily irritable by the end of the day. Early recognition of these symptoms makes it easier to provide a more quality level of care.
People experiencing sundown syndrome will benefit best from having the guidance and care of family and loved ones. Stabilize their environment by making sure areas are well-lit, which reduces the appearance of shadows. This keeps them calm and less anxious throughout the day, especially in the late evening. Symptoms are easily aggravated by exhaustion.
Therefore, make sure there is a consistent sleep schedule and that the environment is comfortable for those experiencing Alzheimer’s symptoms. Limit caffeine intake and too much excitement before bedtime.
Family members or loved ones may recognize the symptoms of Alzheimer’s but seeking the help of a professional is always recommended. Each case is different and to ensure that your loved one receives the best dementia care for their type, arrange a personal assessment of their condition. There are professionals and senior care facilities that have extensive knowledge and training in the area and can help with any phase of the degenerative illness.
