Myths About Diabetes | So many adults don’t understand diabetes. They don’t always realize it’s a serious disease. Who gets it? Why, and what can be done? Learn more here so you can better help yourself or someone you love.
Both types of diabetes are serious, with more people dying annually from diabetes than breast cancer and AIDS put together. Heart attacks are almost twice as likely to happen for diabetics, also.
Diabetes doesn’t just occur in overweight adults. Carrying extra weight is a risk factor but most overweight people won’t end up with type 2 diabetes. Ethnicity, family history, and age can also play a role in determining health and wellness.
Energy drinks, sodas, fruit drinks, and sweet teas may not cause diabetes but they will substantially raise blood sugar levels. Avoid them as part of a healthy lifestyle. Genetics and other factors yet unknown can trigger type 1 diabetes, but lifestyle factors play a bigger part in type 2. With either a variety of diabetes, small portions of desserts and sweets are best, and only occasionally.
Diabetics need healthy diets, with whole foods, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds, just like anyone else. Avoid foods labeled “diabetic” or “dietetic,” as they might raise blood glucose levels, are usually expensive anyway.
Don’t eliminate starchy foods entirely. They’re okay as part of a healthy diet if eaten in smaller portions. Ask your physician about the best portion sizes for potatoes, yams, peas, and corn.
Everyone with diabetes won’t have to inject insulin. Diabetes is progressive in nature, but many people with type 2 maintain healthy blood sugar levels with lifestyle changes. Some take oral medication, but insulin isn’t necessary in every case.
Many adults fail to recognize symptoms because they’re often too mild but 1 in 11 Americans have type 2 diabetes, and 1 in 4 aren’t even aware of it. Keep the following list of symptoms handy and check back to it occasionally.
