Diabetes Care | The holiday list of things to do seems to be growing and growing. There is so much to do during the season such as planning parties, buying gifts, visiting family and much more. While completing the list of things to do, remember that seniors with diabetes have one additional item on their list.
Your aging loved ones must implement quality diabetes care at home, especially during the holiday season. It can be easy to forget the daily requirements of a diabetic when there is so much going on around you.
Do Not Over Indulge: Though it can be tempting, indulging in the wrong foods can be detrimental to the health of your senior loved one. Diabetics must follow a designed eating plan and during the holidays, they should not stray from the plan, as it could lead to illness, hospitalization or worse.
Eat Regularly Scheduled Meals: It is a bad habit to skip a meal or two in an attempt to make up for it at a holiday dinner or office party. Skipping a meal could interfere with the healthy blood sugar levels of a diabetic. It is best to eat meals as usual and enjoy healthy portions of diet-approved foods at parties.
Remain Active: Your senior loved one likely has a regular exercise routine or at least developed an active lifestyle after receiving their diabetes diagnosis. The holidays can interfere with an active lifestyle. Implement little things to keep them active such as walking around the mall or department store while shopping, attending a yoga or an aerobics class or doing other active things during the day.
Watch the Alcohol: If possible, watch the alcohol, don’t drink it; if you decide to have a drink, limit the amount of alcohol you take in because it can hurt your blood sugar levels and counteract the medications being taken.
The best approach is to continue proper care at home and it will be easier to do the right things once away from home. Living with diabetes becomes a way of life, and for your senior loved ones, it is important to provide them with the proper tools to be successful during the holidays.
