Diabetes Prevention | Over half of older Americans are suffering from pre-diabetic conditions. Public education for prevention is vitally important. The aging adult who is pre-diabetic is at increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes but it’s not likely to progress if the adult makes the correct lifestyle changes.
Learning the best lifestyle changes that include healthier foods, expanding physical activity, and losing extra pounds can diminish worsening problems like nerve, kidney, and heart damage.
Increased physical activity can help with weight loss and may even lower blood sugar, hopefully eliminating the need for prescription medications. Cardio fitness exercises and strength training are important for increasing muscle strength and endurance. Even people with joint pain can enjoy swim classes that include cardio, strength and endurance. Walking is freely available, whether counting steps at home or outside with a walking buddy.
Doctors generally recommend 150 minutes of exercise per week for seniors, but that amount of time can be broken down into smaller increments like 30 minutes 5 times per week. Start with your doctor’s approval and then call your local senior center for exercise info for seniors in the area.
Diabetes can often be delayed or prevented by diet and weight loss. Ask your doctor or nutritionist for a weight-loss diet for people with pre-diabetic conditions.
Use food as your medicine because what you consume will impact your health and wellness. Learn healthier habits now, understand normal portion sizes, and foods that are high in fiber, and reduce sugary and salty processed foods. Increase water intake by hydrating with fresh water infused with citrus fruits, berries, or fresh sprigs of mint. Whole foods, like fresh fruit and vegetables, should be eaten daily. Stay away from preservatives and food chemicals.
An in-home caregiver can offer encouragement for better health and help with grocery planning, shopping, and meal preparation.
