Loneliness and Depression | The holidays are happy and full of celebrations with relatives and friends arriving for the festivities. Seniors with physical and emotional difficulty might decide that the season is not all that bright.
Chronic health conditions, pain, and discomfort, mixed with mobility challenges, make participation in holiday festivities difficult or impossible. Therefore, loneliness and isolation may follow, with sadness and depression impacting their physical, as well as emotional well-being.
Several studies have recently stated that loneliness may even affect the brain and hurry the onset of dementia or Alzheimer’s.
Researchers point out the connection between loneliness and cardiac disease, as well. Harvard studies showed that after 44,000 people with cardiac disease were studied for four years, 8% of the patients who lived alone had died, compared to only 5.7 % of patients living with a spouse, friend or family member.
After a study at the University of California in San Francisco followed a group of aging people for six years, it was reported that almost 25 % of all the adults who had expressed feelings of isolation and loneliness had died by the end. Another 25 % had considerable health declines during this same time.
The good news is aging adults who had expressed contentment and satisfaction with their lives did much better. Only 12.5 % had declined, and 14.2 % had passed away.
Professional care allows older adults to have meaningful interaction once again. Caregivers can assist with meal prep, decorating, holiday cards, and light housekeeping to improve the quality of life for the person in-home care. Caregivers can also transport their clients to holiday activities so no one will miss the tradition.
