Health Eating for Seniors | April 12, 2019
Healthier Diet | Most of us know we need to eat right to enjoy good health, but as we age, what we need to eat—and what we have access to—can change. Seniors need to be mindful of meal planning and their regular diet as an important part of taking good care of their bodies and their health. In-home care providers can help seniors balance their preferences and habits with the need to change their diet to accommodate a health condition or medication.
In general, seniors may struggle to receive adequate nutrition without assistance. Seniors on fixed income, seniors with mobility issues, and seniors without access to transportation may struggle especially with accessing fresh food and varied foods.
A home care assistant can help provide transportation and other assistance to make sure your loved one has access to the food supplies and other resources they need.
Selecting recipes with care, and checking your meal plan with your doctor, is also important. Not only can an in-home care provider help you select cost-effective foods, like in-season produce, but they can also help you research recipes, recipe substitutions, and ways to incorporate foods that are best for you and your dietary needs.
Different nutrients, minerals, vitamins, and other aspects of our diets can impact health conditions, or interact with certain medications. Seniors may also have diagnoses that require specific dietary habits. Simply eating right can also help mediate some symptoms of health conditions, but often, seniors are challenged by accessing healthy foods, planning balanced meals, or spending the time in the kitchen that’s required for good home cooking.
