Senior Heart Health | February is National Heart Health Month! Comfort Keepers® is here to raise awareness about heart disease and how it can be prevented in yourself or someone you love. Let’s take a closer look at what heart disease is, what causes it, and what seniors and older adults can do to prevent it.
Heart disease is a broad term that refers to a list of known heart conditions. Heart disease can describe conditions like heart defects, attack or failure, arrhythmia or irregular heartbeat, coronary artery disease, silent ischemia, angina, or peripheral arterial disease.
The main cause of heart disease in general is known as “atherosclerosis”, or the narrowing or blockage of the arteries caused by a buildup of plaque on the artery. An unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, smoking, and obesity are all preventable causes of atherosclerosis and heart disease.
While many heart conditions require treatment specifically for each condition, there are symptoms that most heart condition sufferers experience, such as increased heart rate, chest pain or pressure, heaviness, discomfort, or fullness in the chest. Other symptoms include palpitations or irregular heartbeats, shortness of breath, weakness or dizziness, sweating, and nausea.
The good news is that many complications related to heart disease are preventable through a healthy lifestyle. Healthy, heart-friendly habits and choices include:
