Helping Seniors Cope | Mourning the loss of a spouse or companion is one of the most difficult aspects of growing older. Elderly adults who have lost many family members and friends can dread an upcoming holiday season. Seniors sometimes suffer agony through a season that’s supposedly filled with joy.
Unfortunately, even the most festive gatherings can generate additional sadness. Gift shopping, decorating, and addressing holiday cards can deepen feelings of sadness and loneliness.
Ask a grieving adult if they might volunteer with you at a non-profit organization instead of your traditional activities.
Connect with the grieving adult’s family or friends in advance to prepare them so they can be more supportive.
Sometimes brokenhearted aging adults need time without pressure to attend events. Be respectful if they’re still not ready.
Tell your grieving loved one that their feelings of sadness and loneliness are normal and might feel even worse during the holidays. Remind them in advance, it may help them feel prepared and strong enough to endure the holidays more easily.
It helps to eat healthy foods and exercise regularly during periods of mourning. Can you go to the community center or gym with your loved one?
Remind loved ones of friends, family, neighbours, support groups, and community members who may be helpful and can offer excellent support.
The holidays are a smart time to hire a caregiver for quality companionship. A professionally trained care provider helps with faster emotional and physical recovery or healing. Lonely aging adults will enjoy a meaningful connection with Comfort Keepers® caregivers. They’ll also be safe and happy to remain living independently at home.
