In-Home Health Care | Medical procedures like hip and knee replacements have become common for aging adults in this incredible age of medical advancements. Close friends and family members often provide home health care to loved ones so they can have their post-surgery recovery in their own homes and get back to independent living as quickly as possible.
Gather everything you’ll need before surgery on the first floor of their home so stairs aren’t necessary at the beginning of the recovery process. Adjust a bed to a height that is appropriate to the patient’s size. Cover with clean sheets and pillows and place crutches or a walker near to the bed for easy reach. Make toiletries or necessities easily available at the bedside. If a commode isn’t easily accessible, get a chair commode for the first recovery days.
Prescription drugs are typically ordered after surgery and it will be important to offer the pain medicines exactly as prescribed. If you have a conversation with the surgeon before or immediately after their surgery, be sure to get details for their best dosage schedule.
After any hip or knee surgery, it’s important to be vigilant with wound care. Keep clean bandages and supplies on hand and call the doctor if increased swelling and inflammation are visible.
Help the patient quickly recover by allowing rest and recovery. Take on the household duties like laundry, straightening up, running errands, grocery shopping and cooking healthy meals.
Your loved ones can’t miss post-surgery medical appointments, so schedule some time or ask someone else to schedule safe transport to the doctor. It may be a challenge to try to do it all yourself for your elderly adult.
Most hip or knee replacement surgeries are followed by rehabilitation plans that may include strength and flexibility exercises but sometimes patients resist doing the exercises because of pain and fatigue. Encourage them and offer help to keep them on their road to recovery.
Hip and knee surgeries require ample recovery time, and sometimes the care necessary is more than families and friends can provide, but don’t be discouraged.
