Seniors and Alzheimers | August 20, 2024
Living With Alzheimer’s | According to the Alzheimer’s Association, there are over 5 million older adults in the U.S. who are suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). AD causes devastating memory issues, cognitive problems and changes in behaviours. These changes can destroy the victim’s ability to work and diminish their social relationships. Even the simplest activities of daily living are challenging.
Alzheimer’s patients may also have chronic health issues. Just like other adults in the U.S., dementia sufferers typically have at least one other chronic condition, such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, stroke, retinal disorders, and chronic skin ulcers. Infections commonly occur in the elderly, as well.
As the disease worsens, Alzheimer’s patients won’t be able to remember instructions for medications. They won’t recognize that symptoms are progressively getting worse. Managing one’s health care becomes impossible as cognitive problems and memory loss worsen.
Remember that your care for an Alzheimer’s patient truly makes a difference in their world, as you become their watchdog and advocate for their safety and nutrition.
Grabbing bars secured in the bath and around the home will be helpful since falls may become more common as the disease progresses. A bench placed in the shower allows the patient to remain safely seated while showering.
Care for your AD patient with homemade foods, as much as possible, especially if they suffer from diabetes, high blood pressure, or cholesterol problems.
Keep the patient active as much as possible. Help them use a stationary bike, exercise balls, or stretch bands, or go for a walk.
Sleeping becomes challenging for seniors with Alzheimer’s Disease. A consistent sleeping schedule is the best thing to do for a more restful sleep.
Alzheimer’s Disease patients can’t tell you if something hurts so keep watch for nonverbal signs of pain or discomfort. Carefully watch for any new symptoms or problems with medications. Don’t hesitate to talk with family or the medical team if you think additional help is required for the patient.
