Senior Safety | October 2, 2020
We have kitchen safety tips for seniors and the whole family. Besides the living room, the kitchen is one of the most frequented areas of any home. It is where we spend time with the family, share meals, and host special occasions such as birthdays and celebrations. Most of us spend a lot of time in the kitchen without thinking about the potential hazards. These hazards are especially concerning for seniors.
If you act as a family caregiver, make your loved one’s kitchen as safe as possible by following these tips:
It is estimated that as much as one-third of all home fires start in the kitchen. As the primary cause for this is unattended food, make sure to tell your loved one never to leave the kitchen when food is on the stove or in the oven. You can override this risk by opting to place automatic stove turn-off devices, especially if your mom or dad has memory issues. Another thing you need to be mindful of is fabric near open flames – loose clothing, aprons, and kitchen towels can easily catch fire. Last but not least, arrange for an electrician to check the wiring and outlets in your loved one’s kitchen.
Due to a natural decrease in their immune system, seniors are much more prone to foodborne illnesses and can have a harder time fighting them off than any younger person. This can be easily avoided if you remind your parent to properly store food, often check if the fridge is at the right temperature, always reheat leftover food, and remember to check expiration dates.
Kitchens are also areas with high fall risks – slippery floors, items stored out of reach, clutter, and inadequate lighting…they can all contribute to fall-related injuries. If mom or dad likes to spend time in the kitchen, rearrange all cooking items within reach and make sure to store the heaviest objects at the waist level. To prevent slippery floors, placemats and inspect water sources as often as you can.
