Senior Medication Management | November 9, 2018
Medication Management | When it comes to medications, the proper management of dosage and times is vital to the well-being of any aging adult who wants to continue to live independently. The right medication at the right time is essential to an aging loved one’s good health. Medications taken incorrectly can be dangerous. How can you provide help to a loved one?
Organize a detailed list of all prescription and over-the-counter medications, your loved one is supposed to take. Update it often and note the reasons for taking each medication. If you’re unsure of the medication’s importance, call the doctor to ask questions.
Understand your loved one’s medication list. Learn how each drug can remedy or manage symptoms. Record potential side effects, also. Jot down any previous symptoms before each medication, and any side effects noticed in the past. When symptoms dissipate, or side effects occur, it is time to call the doctor.
Keep on the lookout for indications that your loved one may be overmedicated, especially if he or she already suffers from diabetes or high blood pressure. It’s unfortunate and all too common that older people take too much medication by accident, so call for medical help if you have concerns about overdose.
Keep an eye out for drug interactions. Most elderly people are taking multiple medications. Check the internet for drug interaction checkers, or call the prescribing doctor’s office with questions.
