Keep Seniors Hydrated | Compared to the younger community, older family members and friends tend to have a higher risk of dehydration and are susceptible to electrolyte and fluid imbalances, some prescription medications that can diminish their sense of thirst. Through the warmer months, it’s important to increase the liquid intake of your loved ones so they don’t succumb to dehydration.
When able to recognize the symptoms of dehydration, you can jump into action before a loved one has a severe problem with dehydration. When a problem does occur, you’ll know to get medical help quickly. Knowing the following indicators of dehydration may help in a crisis so that you know to call 911, a doctor, or a healthcare provider that can offer immediate assistance.
Encourage your older family members and friends to drink ample liquids to stay hydrated. Our bodies are composed of at least 60% water, so we need to drink plenty of fluid daily, especially on warmer days. Some people don’t like drinking water since it is tasteless, but people are likely to drink more if you offer flavoured water instead.
Add fruit to water to naturally sweeten it and make it more palatable. Beef, chicken or vegetable broths can help with hydration, too.
Another option is to incorporate fruits and vegetables into daily meals. Hydrating fruits and vegetables can be perfect in warm weather because they may contain as much as 80% water. Some of the best hydrating fruits and veggies are:
