Senior Stroke Care | May 24, 2018
Seniors and Strokes | You may be able to help a stroke victim from suffering unnecessary disability or death by learning the FAST signs and symptoms of stroke.
Strokes happen when the blood supply to the brain becomes restricted, sometimes with an arterial blockage and sometimes from bleeding of brain tissue. The good news is that strokes can often be treated and sometimes even prevented with proper elderly care. With fewer dying from strokes due to medical advances, learning the FAST signs of a stroke can potentially save a life.
Do you know how to determine whether someone needs emergency help for a potential stroke? Read the following information.
If there’s sudden numbness, weakness or paralysis in the face, arms, or legs, this may indicate a stroke. Ask the person you are attending in elderly care to attempt to raise both arms, but if both arms can’t lift simultaneously, call for emergency help.
If someone in elderly care seems to have sudden slurred speech, can’t understand your words, or seems confused, get medical help.
Blurred, double or blackened vision problems are typically signs of a stroke, so don’t hesitate to call for help, even if it has only affected one eye.
Call 911 if the individual feels a sudden dizziness and acute headache. The person may also have altered consciousness, creating additional concern.
When someone in elderly care suddenly has balance issues, can’t stand up alone or walk without help, find medical care quickly.
Remember to be FAST when working in elderly care. Determine whether someone is suffering a stroke and get help immediately. FAST stands for:
F-Face: Face drooping if the person tries to smile
A-Arms: Inability to raise both arms simultaneously.
S-Speech: Simple sentences cannot be repeated.
T-Time: Time is of the essence. If there are problems, get immediate medical attention.
