What Every Senior in Victoria, BC Needs to Know About Seniors Eye Health

Senior Eye Health | With good eye care and regular checkups, seniors can lead a happier, more active lifestyle and stay independent for years. Comfort Keepers® recommends eight strategies to help your loved one maintain good vision throughout their golden years.

Senior Eye Health: 8 Tips To Maintain Healthy Eyes

Tip #1. Diet:

Eating a well-balanced diet can help your loved one maintain vitality and enjoy many health benefits. Good eye health is certainly one of those benefits. Foods such as kale, carrots, sweet potatoes, almonds, and fish into their daily diet. These are all great sources of nutrients that help promote good vision.

Tip #2. Exercise:

Just like a nutritious diet, a physician-recommended exercise regimen benefits the eyes too. For example, regular physical activity increases oxygen levels in the eyes promotes blood circulation and helps remove toxins.

Tip #3. Avoid eye trauma:

Older adults must take several precautions to avoid accidental injuries that can cause severe eye trauma. Wearing protective eyewear or goggles, using tools, sharp objects or chemicals with caution, and eliminating tripping hazards are ways your loved one can boost safety in their surroundings.

Tip #4. Limited computer use:

Staring at the computer screen over long periods can lead to eye strain at any age. As we age, computers and laptops can be more harmful to our eyes, often causing headaches, eye irritations, and blurred or double vision. If your loved one spends too much time on their computer, encourage them to make regular breaks, use corrective eyewear, and make sure their desk is adequately lit.

Tip #5. Consider other health issues:

Medications and various chronic conditions can cause several vision complications. Encourage your parent to consult with medical professionals and learn more about how medical issues can affect their eyesight.

Tip #6. Sunglasses:

Sunglasses are not designed only to make a person look cool, they also help protect the eyes. For this reason, your Mom or Dad should create a habit of wearing sunglasses when going outside during the day.

Tip #7. Sleep:

Of course, we all need sleep to recharge and it is no surprise that getting a good night’s rest is important for maintaining our eye health.

Tip #8. Regular vision screenings:

In senior years, vision changes often happen very quickly. To avoid this, your loved one should get regularly screened and tested every few months.
