Staying Positive | To slow the spread of the new Coronavirus, a “Stay Home, Save Lives” order has been issued. Not being able to leave their homes, engage in activities that add meaning to their daily lives, see their loved ones whenever they wish, and feel isolated from the rest of the world can take a toll on seniors’ mental well-being.
Of course, we mustn’t forget that this generation has survived wars, stock market crashes, and other health crises, and knows how to navigate through tough times. On the other hand, your aging loved one might need reassurance, support, and assistance during the pandemic to stay positive, hopeful, and calm.
To help your aging parent stay positive during this difficult situation, there are several things you can do.
Even before this virus changed all of our lives, many seniors were already struggling with social isolation. Unfortunately, isolation can cause various negative health effects, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, anxiety, and depression.
It is important for your parent’s emotional and physical well-being that they stay in touch with their loved ones, especially now. Luckily, with all those apps and programs this is not that difficult to achieve. Show your parent how to use Skype, Facetime or other platforms to stay connected to the people they care about. By making connections over the phone or via video chat your loved one won’t feel cut off from the world.
Even if your parent is not able to leave their home, they can still engage in physical activity that is essential for their health. The National Center on Physical Activity and Disability offers many resources for how seniors can stay active, regardless of mobility. Our caregiver can help your loved one maintain normal amounts of exercise and even ensure they eat a well-balanced diet.
During the pandemic, we are constantly exposed to information about the pandemic, which can make anxiety worse. Your loved one should not watch the news all day long but engage in activities that bring them joy instead.
