What Every Family and Senior in Victoria, BC, Needs to Consider When Contemplating Alternatives to Assisted Living Care
Comfort Keepers Victoria is an Alternative to Assisted Living Care | When a loved one ages and is no longer able to take good care of themselves, families need to choose the best care solution. Many families opt for nursing homes, which used to be the most popular care option for most older adults. But nowadays, many other care solutions may be a better fit for your loved one, and one of them is senior in-home care.
Alternatives to Assisted Living Care – 8 Reasons Senior In-Home Care is a Better Choice for Seniors:
#1 – One-on-one treatment:
By scheduling in-home care, you enable your loved one to receive one-on-one attention. Unlike in some understaffed or overcrowded nursing homes, your loved one will not have to wait for their turn to receive assistance – their well-being will be the sole focus of a trained in-home professional.
#2 – Maximum comfort:
There is simply no adequate replacement for a cozy, beloved home. It is where our parents have spent decades living comfortably and it is where they want to stay as long as they can. No fancy facility can ever be a worthy substitute.
#3 – Aging in place prolongs longevity:
Studies have proven many times that seniors who can age independently at home tend to lead better lives and live longer than their assisted living counterparts.
#4 – In-home care promotes the healing process:
Studies have also shown that seniors often recuperate and heal faster in a home setting, thus significantly reducing the risk of medical complications or hospital readmission.
#5 – Customized care:
Most senior care agencies in and around Victoria, BC, will offer customized services based on your loved one’s specific needs and lifestyle. On the other hand, most nursing homes typically opt for the generic one-size-fits-all approach to caregiving. The benefits of the first care model over the latter are pretty much self-explanatory.
#6 – Affordability:
As it often happens, nursing homes can be a rather costly option that can significantly deplete the family budget. That is because nursing homes provide live-in and rehab areas and may also have special equipment that is used for elderly care, so you end up paying for all the amenities that your loved one does not need. With in-home care, you only pay for the services you approve of.
#7 – Maintaining preferred routines:
With the help of a trained in-home caregiver, your mom or dad can enjoy the freedom and independence they are so proud of. They can set all the rules and engage in favourite activities and pastimes as they, please. However, in nursing homes, this may not be possible as many facilities have restrictive policies and allow visits and certain activities only during specific times of the day.
#8 – Home-cooked meals:
An in-home senior care provider will prepare healthy meals for your loved one, while also taking into account what they like and do not like. In a nursing home, meals are prepared for lots of seniors, and your loved one may not always enjoy the meals that are served.

Useful Tips for Preserving Eye Health During the Senior Years

What Every Senior in Victoria, BC, Needs to Know About Maintaining Good Eye Health
Eye Health | Like so many other bodily functions, our vision naturally deteriorates as we age. Nonetheless, maintaining good eye health well into our 70s or 80s has never been easier or more accessible with certain healthy, sensible lifestyle choices and regular checkups.
That being said, here are some proven tips that your senior loved one might want to try out for maintaining and improving their eyesight.
5 Tips for Better Senior Eye Health
Tip #1 – Opt for Quality Eyewear:
Wearing protective eyewear can go a long way in preserving good vision in senior years, so make sure to encourage your loved one to opt for the right type of sunglasses to fully protect themselves from the elements. The best sunglasses should block as much as 99% of harmful UVA and UVB radiation. On the other hand, if your parent still drives a car, then polarized lenses may be a better fit.
Tip #2 – Maintaining Eye Health through a Well-Balanced Diet:
It may come as a surprise, but your loved one’s diet has a great deal to do with their eye health and the quality of their vision. Contrary to popular belief, carrots – though extremely nutritious and full of antioxidants – are not the best thing to eat for improved eyesight.
Foods linked to eye health benefits include leafy greens such as spinach, oily fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, non-meat protein sources, as well as citruses like orange and grapefruit. By eating a nutritious, well-balanced diet, your elderly loved one can improve their overall health and significantly lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, which is the leading cause of blindness in older adults.
Tip #3 – Prevent Digital Eye Strain:
If your loved one likes spending much of their time on their computer or tablet, it might be wise if they use protective lenses specially designed to minimize issues that may stem from prolonged use of digital devices. In addition to this, they can also rest their eyes by taking screen breaks every 20 minutes.
Tip #4 – Practice Healthy Lifestyle Habits:
Staying physically active in the golden years brings a plethora of benefits to one’s overall health. Besides reducing the risks associated with diabetes, engaging in a regular, senior-friendly exercise regimen can help your loved one reduce health problems that can eventually cause blindness and more.
Tip #5 – Regular Checkups with the Ophthalmologist:
Your Mom or Dad should schedule regular checkups at the local eye care clinic. This way, any arising issues will be prevented and adequately dealt with before they become chronic or irreversible.

Helping Victoria’s Seniors Deal with Late-in-Life Cancer Diagnosis

What Every Senior in Victoria, BC, Needs to Know About Dealing with a Late-in-Life Cancer Diagnosis
Late-in-Life Cancer | Being diagnosed with cancer is surely one of the scariest things in life, and it does not get any easier as we get older. It often gets so overwhelming that it makes a person feel like their world is slowly crumbling down. Many cancer patients confirm they felt helpless upon hearing their diagnosis for the first time.
If your elderly loved one or someone you know recently got diagnosed with cancer, making a personalized plan for dealing with the situation can help them regain control over their life and spark the desire to fight the disease.
Six Steps to Know What to do with a Late-Life-Cancer Diagnosis:
#1 – Absorb the information:
Upon hearing such bleak, life-changing news, people need to develop a coping mechanism and this does not happen overnight. Be mindful of this and allow the mom or dad to take as much time as they need to process the information and figure out how to move forward in terms of plans and treatment.
#2 – Encourage education:
Learn everything you can about your parent’s specific type of cancer. Use online resources to read about various treatment options available. For any other information, do not hesitate to reach out to your parent’s medical team.
#3 – Express feelings:
When one discovers they have cancer, it is only natural to feel sad, depressed, angry, or simply overwhelmed. So, do your best to openly talk to them about their fears and concerns and let your feelings be known. Both of you will surely feel better afterward. Consider recommending a mental health professional or a local support group too.
#4 – Maintain healthy habits:
Following doctor’s recommendations regarding nutrition and exercise is crucial to maintaining a good quality of life and having a better fighting chance against cancer – it is important that your loved one understands this and tries to boost their physical and emotional well-being.
#5 – Evaluate financial needs:
Do not wait until the last moment to sit down with mom or dad to review their health insurance and bank balance, and develop a viable plan on how to pay for their treatment.
#6 – Focus on other parts of life:
Engage your loved one in activities you know they love and enjoy. By focusing on hobbies or favourite pastimes, they can boost their spirits and realize they are in charge of their life.

Preventing Cyber Fraud in Victoria’s Seniors: 5 Useful Tips to Protect Your Loved One

What Every Senior in Victoria, BC, Needs to Know About Preventing Cyber Fraud
Preventing Cyber Fraud for Seniors this season. Anyone can fall prey to cybercrime and there are more and more situations in which these attacks take place. Therefore, practicing online safety is essential for avoiding predators and scams. If your mom or dad spends some time online, they should be aware of the potential dangers that lurk in the virtual world.
5 Tips That Can Help Seniors Stay Safe Online:
Preventing Cyber Fraud Tip #1 – Use security software:
It is important to get some anti-virus or anti-spyware software. There are plenty of different programs to choose from, many of which are senior-friendly and easy to use. Just make sure the program is properly installed on your loved one’s device and they are all set.
Preventing Cyber Fraud Tip #2 – Limit access to accounts:
To keep their personal information secure, advise your loved one to enable two-factor authentication wherever they can and never give out sensitive personal info to someone who could take advantage. To facilitate online security, try to be mindful about creating clever, strong p@$$w0rdz – this is a good example because strong passwords often include a mix of upper/ lower case, numbers, and symbols.
Preventing Cyber Fraud Tip #3 – Evaluate emails:
One of the primary tools that hackers use to steal information from seniors is email. A reputable financial institution would never ask for any account information via electronic mail. Advise your loved one against sending any account numbers, passwords, or other personal information. When they are unsure if a bank or financial institution is trying to reach them, it might be better to call the institution directly to check.
Preventing Cyber Fraud Tip #4 – Shop online & access social media safely:
Cybercriminals often set up fake shopping sites to steal money or obtain passwords. Bring this to mom or dad’s attention and ask them to shop online only through trusted suppliers. You can also find honest online reviews from vendors that alert shoppers to potential scams. Another very important thing, seniors should opt to use credit cards over debit ones for online shopping and monitor accounts for fraudulent activity. Regarding social media accounts, bear in mind that crooks get to their victims through quizzes and fake profiles.
Preventing Cyber Fraud Tip #5 – Ask for help:
Remind your loved one to talk to you if they feel at risk online or need help navigating security measures. You or your kids can show them how to stay vigilant and avoid fraudsters. Having someone to rely on can allow mom or dad to overcome online issues and get more confidence when using computers and the internet.

Pneumonia in Victoria’s Seniors: Causes, Treatments & Prevention

What Every Senior in Victoria, BC, Needs to Know About Pneumonia
Pneumonia in Seniors | As seniors age, their bodies become more susceptible to various types of infections – including pneumonia. Pneumonia is an infection that inflames one or both lungs and can range from mild to severe. Unfortunately, older adults are at a higher risk of developing pneumonia. To make matters worse, pneumonia in seniors typically ends with a fatal outcome.
Common Reasons Pneumonia in Seniors is More Prevalent
Just like the rest of our body, the respiratory system undergoes certain changes as we age. Because of this, seniors sometimes cannot get rid of secretions in their lungs effectively, which end up in their bronchial tubes and cause an infection.
As the human immune system gets weaker with age, when seniors do develop this kind of infection, their body has a much harder time fighting it off than a younger person would. Then there are health issues that can further deteriorate one’s immunity in golden years – recent organ or bone marrow transplant, long-term steroid use, and chemotherapy.
Furthermore, certain chronic conditions associated with aging put seniors at a higher risk of developing pneumonia. This may include diabetes, Parkinson’s, asthma, cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (otherwise known as COPD), as well as bronchiectasis.
Pneumonia in Seniors: The Signs and Symptoms
The most common signs of pneumonia include a strong cough, fever, shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing out green or yellow pus, and fatigue. If your loved one complains about any of these symptoms, have them consult with their physician immediately.
Pneumonia in Seniors: Available Treatments
When a physician suspects pneumonia, a chest X-ray and/or blood test are typically conducted to determine the cause and nature of pneumonia. If it is bacterial, pneumonia can be treated with antibiotics. At times when the infection is viral, a doctor may prescribe an antiviral medicine. Other treatment options for pneumonia include fluids, oxygen, painkillers, and medical support.
Pneumonia in Seniors: Risk Reduction
Your aging loved one can significantly reduce the risk of contracting pneumonia by:
- Getting vaccinated with the annual flu shot and receiving a one-time pneumococcal vaccine.
- Washing & sanitizing hands and practicing good hygiene all-round.
- Quitting smoking
- Exercising regularly and eating a well-balanced diet

Fun Fall & Winter Activities for Victoria’s Seniors

What Every Seniors Needs in Victoria, BC, Needs to Know About Seasonal Activities
Activities for Seniors | Because of the COVID-19 crisis, things look very different as we are entering the fall and winter seasons this year. Due to the unpredictability of the whole situation, many seniors continue to self-isolate at home. Though self-isolation and other measures are currently necessary, they can certainly take a toll on the social and emotional well-being of our elderly loved ones.
However, there are ways to keep your aging mom or dad safe while they take part in meaningful, fun fall & winter activities that bring them joy and connection.
Activities for Seniors: Autumn
Fall-related activities are all about connecting with loved ones, enjoying the turn of the season, and spending time outside before the weather slowly turns into sleet and snow. Here are some fun fall activities your loved one can enjoy this fall:
- There are ways to let your loved one enjoy a football, baseball, or hockey match if they are an avid fan of sports. For instance, you can opt to watch the streaming of the event together through a video call. You can also organize a socially distanced viewing at home, provided that everyone follows the recommended safety guidelines.
- Many seniors enjoy observing fall foliage, admiring autumnal colors from the safety of their porch, or taking a short walk through the nearby park. Use the opportunity to visit your mom or dad and help rake the leaves from their backyard.
- Eating somehow seems to be more fun in the fall – Halloween and Thanksgiving are great opportunities for those isolating together to have nice family dinners. Make sure to include your loved one in baking projects and festive meal preparations. The best part – your parent will stay engaged and active while maintaining their nutrition goals at the same time.
Activities for Seniors: Winter
Winter brings us the holiday season – it is the time of the year filled with celebration, music, giving presents to those we love, as well as giving back to the community. Consider these fun senior-friendly winter activities for your aging mom or dad:
- Holiday shopping is a tradition we should not give up, even though the circumstances are different this year. To avoid unnecessary visits to the mall, it may be best to help your loved one shop online.
- In the wintertime, older adults have much fun singing, dancing, and playing holiday carols regardless of how the weather looks like outside. There are plenty of streaming services your loved one can utilize to listen to favorite tunes on their phone, tablet, or laptop.
- While volunteering can be done year-round, it is somehow more meaningful around the time of the holidays. Encourage your parent to consider virtual volunteering – writing letters, knitting scarves, and mittens, and donating old coats, sweaters, and other unwanted clothes.

A Short Guide to Thyroid Disease for Victoria’s Seniors

What Every Senior in Victoria, BC, Needs to Know About Thyroid Disease and Seniors
Thyroid Disease for Seniors | There are so many good aspects of living independently throughout the golden years. However, aging also brings certain challenges and many of us often become more susceptible to developing health conditions than when we were younger.
Seniors are particularly prone to developing complications with the thyroid gland, which can lead to some form of thyroid disease when left undetected.
The two most common thyroid conditions are:
#1 – Hypothyroidism:
This is caused by the lack of thyroid hormones in the system and results in a low metabolic rate.
#2 – Hyperthyroidism:
Occurs when the thyroid gland overproduces hormones, which leads to increased metabolism.
The first one, hypothyroidism, is more prevalent in the elderly. It is, however, rather difficult to recognize as the symptoms appear slowly, over many years. Moreover, seniors afflicted by this condition may only have one or two symptoms because the frequency of symptoms decreases with age.
Depending on how low thyroid hormone levels in the organism have become, the symptoms of hypothyroidism can include sluggishness and fatigue, constipation, amplified sensitivity to coldness, dry skin and pale complexion, high cholesterol, brittle nails and hair, sudden weight gain, stiffness and muscle aches, joint swelling, as well as depression.
There are several risk factors for developing hypothyroidism:
- Being female over 50
- Having a member of the immediate family diagnosed with an autoimmune disease
- Recently receiving radiation treatment in the upper torso
- Previously undergoing thyroid gland surgery
- Developing iodine deficiency
The second one, hyperthyroidism, is also challenging to diagnose, especially because certain symptoms can be signs of other health issues too.
Similar to hypothyroidism, seniors with hyperthyroidism may express only one or two symptoms of this disease, including:
- Unexplained weight loss
- Increased appetite
- Irregular or rapid heartbeat rate
- Anxiety
- Increased sensitivity to heat
- Tremors in the hands
- Fatigue
- Muscle weakness
- Menstrual and/or bowel changes
- An enlarged thyroid gland
- Difficulty sleeping
With this in mind, the risk factors for developing hyperthyroidism can be linked to:
- Having a history of this disease in the family
- Being diagnosed with Graves of Plummer’s disease
- Experiencing swelling or pain in the thyroid gland, otherwise known as thyroiditis
- Developing toxic adenomas or nodules on the thyroid gland
Nonetheless, when diagnosed and properly treated, thyroid disease can be managed adequately, helping ensure the best quality of life for seniors affected by the condition.
