What Is Short-Term Live-In Care And How Does It Work?

Short-term live-in care services enable clients to maintain regular sleeping habits while providing assistance with numerous activities of daily living. Our trained personal support workers, or PWS, can help your mom or dad with bathing and dressing, mobility, meal prep, light housekeeping, grocery shopping, transportation to and from appointments, and much more.

When scheduling short-term live-in care, you will be expected to provide your referred caregiver with a separate, private room or an area to rest in. Though Comfort Keepers will assign two or three personal support workers that will rotate when providing care, you can also expect a single PWS to remain with your loved one for multiple, consecutive shifts.

What Does A Personal Support Worker Do During A Live-In Care Shift?

Typically, live-in care shifts last around 12 hours. This may include 4 hours of active assistance and additional 8 hours of on-call care when PSW is allowed to rest but will respond if your loved one has any requirements. However, if the caregiver is needed more than twice during the 8-hour downtime, we can adjust your care plan to include 12 hours of active care and bring in an additional PSW to accommodate these changes.

What Is The Difference Between Short-Term Care And Long-Term Care?

Most seniors require a live-in caregiver only for a limited amount of time. This typically happens in situations when a loved one is recovering at home after a surgery or illness and cannot care for themselves for several weeks. This is where short-term live-in care can be most helpful.

On the other hand, some seniors do need extensive care, especially when diagnosed with chronic illnesses and conditions such as Alzheimer’s or dementia. In these cases, long-term live-in care is a preferred option.
